St. Peter’s offers a solid programme of learning that strongly affirms basic literacy and numeracy skill development. We are committed to and staff receive ongoing training in the Department of Education Victorian Early Years Literacy Development programme. There is a similar commitment to numeracy development.

The total curriculum aligns with the requirements of the Victorian DSE (Directorate of School Education) which covers key areas of:

Language
Mathematics
Science and Technology
Studies of Society and Environment
Personal Development (Health and P.E.)
The Arts (Art and Music)
LOTE (German)

We emphasise traditional basic skills but encourage innovative strategies to provide these skills.

Christian Education

Opening and closing services are held on the first and last day of term. A weekly Chapel Service is lead by a team of presenters each Friday morning 9.00 am. Brief devotions are held daily. Students are encouraged to support a worthwhile cause by donation at the Friday Worship Service.

In the regular Christian Education Programme the “Life” Curriculum, a Scripture Programme developed by the Lutheran Church of Australia, is used.  When families elect to come to St. Peter’s a commitment for student participation in all facets of our Curriculum is required.

We participate in / with: community awareness programs, cultural performances, current and ongoing safety awareness initiatives, visiting speakers, Craft Elective Program, Inter-school Sport and P.E. Program, Swimming Program, shared inter-school curriculum days.

Morning Recess 11.00 am – 11.30 am
Lunch 1.00 pm – 1.45 pm
Dismissal 3.20 pm

During Term 1 Prep students do not attend school on Wednesdays.

Homework

We recognise student’s need for leisure time and participation in home tasks and activities. Homework is kept to a minimum. The aim of homework is to support the student in his/her learning and to give time for practice that consolidates. Emphasis is placed on reading by, reading with and reading to children, spelling, mathematics. At various times other areas of work will also be encouraged through homework. Excessive homework is discouraged. A positive attitude, a daily time schedule and short sessions are encouraged.

In general the following homework times per night are suggested:

Prep/Year 1 10 minutes
Year 2 & 3 15 minutes
Year 4 20 minutes
Year 5 25 minutes
Year 6 40/45 minutes

Pupil Absences

The school is required by law to seek from parents (or guardians) a written explanation for absence/s from school on pupil’s return to school.

Exclusion From School

For specified medical reasons and for the protection of other children – see Infectious Diseases (page 11) – a child should not attend school.

Parents As Partners

At St. Peter’s we enjoy working in team. We strongly believe that parental involvement enriches a child’s experience at school and actively encourage participation by parents in a variety of facets of the programme e.g. reading, craft electives, sport, group activities.

Assessment and Reporting

Regular monitoring of student work provides the basis of assessment and reporting in line with the CSF (Curriculum Standards Framework) guidelines . In Term One verbal reporting through Parent Interviews occurs. In Terms Two and Four written reports on student progress are sent home. 

Parents are heartily encouraged to discuss their child’s progress with teachers at any time during the year.  St Peter’s participates annually in the AIM (Achievement Improvement Monitor) for all Years 3 & 5 students, a statewide Department of Education initiative.
